Weather Policy The John Shippen Swing School is committed to providing a safe and high quality experience for all participants. Because golf is an outdoor activity, weather conditions may occasionally impact scheduled sessions. In the event of unsafe or unfavorable weather conditions, including but not limited to heavy rain, lightning, severe storms, excessive heat, or unsafe course conditions, sessions may be delayed, modified, relocated, or canceled at the discretion of Preserve Shady Rest, Inc. and program staff. To help ensure all participants receive the full curriculum experience, the program schedule includes one additional backup week built into the season calendar. If a session must be canceled due to weather, the curriculum schedule will shift accordingly and continue into the designated makeup week. This additional week allows the John Shippen Swing School to complete the full instructional curriculum while prioritizing participant safety and program quality. All weather related decisions made by Preserve Shady Rest staff are final. Families will be notified as soon as possible regarding any schedule changes or cancellations. John Shippen, Jr. John Shippen Jr. was a trailblazer whose impact on the game of golf continues to shape its future. In 1896, he became the first American-born golf professional and one of the first Black golfers to compete in the U.S. Open, breaking barriers in a sport that lacked diversity and access. After competing in multiple U.S. Open Championships and continuing his professional career, including participation in the pioneering United Golfers Association, Shippen’s influence extended far beyond competition. He later became the head golf professional at Shady Rest Country Club, where he dedicated 33 years to teaching and mentoring the next generation of golfers. Today, the Shippen Swing School proudly continues that legacy. Our program is built on the same principles that defined Shippen’s approach as a teacher: strong fundamentals, intentional practice, and personal development. By carrying forward his lessons, we are not only teaching the game of golf, we are developing the next generation of players, leaders, and trailblazers.
